Elder Roy Britton, the 2nd of four children born to Johnnie and Gussie Britton, was born in Brownsville, Tn. His parents moved to Chicago IL., where he was reared, while he was still a babe in arms.
Elder Britton received his education in Chicago, having graduated from Walter Scott Elementary School and Chicago Vocational High School. He furthered his education by earning an undergraduate degree in the teaching of German from the University of Illinois, Chicago Circle Campus and an MBA from DePaul University. He later earned an MDiv (Masters of Divinity) Degree at Northern Baptist Theological Seminary in Lombard, IL.
Having been brought up in the fear and admonition of almighty God by his family, Elder Britton gave his life to the Lord at the tender young age of twelve. He became a member of Mt. Eagle Baptist Church in Chicago, under the Pastorate of the late Rev. C.J. Rodgers, where his parents worhipped. At Mt. Eagle he joined the Jr. Choir (then known as the Eaglelites). He began taking piano lessons from the church Organist, Mrs. Lucinda Blackmon, and eventually became one of the church musicians, serving in that capacity through many of his teenage and young adult years.
It was while serving as minister of music at St. Matthew AME Church in Argo, IL. that Elder Britton finally responded to a call that had been going out throughout his life - a call to the ministry of the word - a call from which he ran for far too many years. It was while being installed as a steward of St. Matthew that Rev. Lillie Cullar, his mother in the ministry, laid hand upon him and said, "preach my word," a command that was obviously conveyed to her through the Holy Spirit. It was at this point that Elder Britton fell out under the power of the Holy Spirit and subsequently realized that he could run no longer. He accepted the call to ministry, preached his inaugural sermon on January 26, 1992 and began the five-year training regimen of the AME church. He was ordained an elder in September of 1997 by the late Bishop Robert Thomas Jr. and appointed pastor of Hyde Park AME Church in 1998, where he served for six blessed and rewarding years.
In 2004, God led Elder Britton in another direction. He teamed up with Rev. Henry Roberts, whom he had met in seminary and, together, they founded Couriers For Christ Ministries, where he is now priviledged to serve as pastor of a very wonderful and loving congregation.
Elder Britton now understands that God had a master plan for his life all the time, long before he realized and responded to God's plan. God is truly sovereign and will always accomplish His purpose. Praise be to God Almighty!
"For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus. (Phil. 1:6)
